Detailed Design & Construction Supervision for the "New National Assembly Building" at Banjul

The Gambia, West Africa
Cities & Territorial Development

Project Description

This green building houses the Parliament of the Gambia located in West Africa. It has been conceived as an iconic and symbolic building. The curved roof represents the flow of the river Gambia and golden cone houses the assembly hall which represents the orange flame of hope – an important theme depicted in the country’s banner. The green embankments represent the agriculture which forms the sustenance of this river line country.

The design envisages naturally ventilated and cool spaces and public areas. It maximizes the entry of indirect light through devices such as skylights and internal courts and the innovative perforated shading screens of the assembly hall.

This small project for this country involved the challenge of the conception of an iconic and signature building with its sweeping curve, environmental sky-frame roof, and use of sustainable and green design strategies.

Assystem Stup was responsible for the detailed architectural and engineering design and works supervision for the construction of the New National Assembly Building of Gambia.
