Context and challenges
Transportation infrastructure must ensure the sustainability and efficiency of existing and future systems in the face of changes in the sector: energy transition, increasing urban mobility, and exponential exchanges between cities and countries.
The current state of transportation infrastructure is not able to cope with a continuous increase in the number of transportation users and urbanisation, environmental issues and the need for interoperability will radically change transportation systems. Stricter requirements for safety, reliability, comfort and environmental standards will also have to be met. The disruptions offered by digital technology will also revolutionise transportation projects and infrastructures, which have become complex due to the growing number of users.
Respond to ageing transport infrastructures and high population growth
As public transport ridership increases, the challenge is to maintain and upgrade existing infrastructure and increase capacity, while ensuring service continuity. Renovation, upgrading and maintenance operations should be seen as an opportunity to introduce digital technologies offering predictive maintenance solutions. These should ensure that the system operates smoothly and reliably, with minimal or no downtime.
Develop sustainable infrastructures and hydrogen mass transportation solutions
Urban transportation has to be the centre of concerns for sustainable and smart cities. For the players in the sector, it is necessary to design, operate and maintain modes of transport that respect the environment. Developing new hydrogen transport networks is also a central challenge that will soon concern all continents facing climate change issues.
Deal with the critical nature of transport infrastructures
Transportation networks play a crucial role in our society. They are the lifelines of our regions and the places where people gather and interact. To ensure smooth and consistent operations, it is essential to have reliable and safe facilities that provide services that meet users’ needs, which is made possible by the implementation of digital solutions and systems.

Our expertise in Metros & railways
Assystem Stup is an international engineering group with a strong expertise in complex and regulated environments such as metro and railway sectors. Acting as owner engineer, Assystem Stup offers multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral skills. We have been advising on metro projects for three decades and have strong expertise in the traffic network, tunnels, underpasses, elevated viaducts and underground stations.
Assystem Stup has also developed expertise over the years in planning entire rail systems, including track and permanent way design, associated rail infrastructure such as station buildings, locomotive sheds, water supply, electrical services, rail accessory production plants, rail car unloading management, and restoration of rail structures.
Our main skills lie in managing large infrastructure projects and our ability to integrate complex systems. The systems provided by Assystem Stup for rail and metro networks are instrumentation and control systems (signalling, CBTC, ATS), system equipment (rolling stock, rail, electric traction, overhead lines, garages), electromechanical equipment (HVAC, smoke removal, disabled persons, elevators, escalators), energy distribution (transformers and distribution substations), information and surveillance systems (passenger information systems, rolling stock traffic control system, video surveillance).
Our main services in Metros & railways
Project management (PMO, construction supervision, testing, commissioning …)
Systems engineering, PLM, Digital Twin, management of regulatory requirements
Automation, instrumentation and control systems integration
Support in safety and security standards and requirements (Hydrogen, ATEX, SEVESO, Nuclear…)
