Assystem in India Completes Design Consultancy for Mumbai Metro Line 3
The design consultancy services for the underground sections of Mumbai Metro Line 3, undertaken by Assystem in India, is a transformative infrastructure project set to enhance urban mobility and quality of life in Mumbai. Also known as the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz line or the Aqua Line, this 33.5 km metro corridor includes 10 stations, nine of which are underground.
The first phase, a 12.44 km stretch from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey, was inaugurated by our honorable Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi on October 5, 2024, and opened to the public on October 7, 2024. The line is expected to be fully operational by June 2025, operated by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL).
Key Benefits of Mumbai Metro Line 3
- Reduced road traffic by 35%, taking approximately 700,000 vehicles off Mumbai’s roads. This reduction will lower carbon emissions and improve air quality in Mumbai, one of India’s most polluted cities.
- Connecting southern and western suburbs, the metro line provides faster, direct access between major hubs. For example, travel time from Cuffe Parade to the airport will be halved, making it convenient for commuters and travelers alike.
- Aims to stimulate redevelopment projects and make the area more appealing to investors and homebuyers.
- The project is expected to contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and boosting the real estate market.
Yogesh Waingankar, Structures Head at Assystem in India, remarked, “Once Metro 3 is fully operational, it will enhance accessibility for residents commuting between Dadar in south-central Mumbai and the northern suburbs, significantly benefiting daily commuters.”
Assystem in India is honored to contribute to this landmark project, helping reshape Mumbai’s urban landscape for a sustainable and efficient future.
Thane Creek Bridge III: Enhancing Connectivity for a Thriving Urban Hub
As part of the mission to alleviate traffic on the Sion-Panvel Highway, Assystem collaborated with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC) to undertake the development of Thane Creek Bridge III (TCB-3). This infrastructure expansion aims to support growing commuter demand between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, especially with the recent upgrade to a 10-lane Sion-Panvel Highway.
Project Overview
MSRDC engaged Assystem for this major bridge project marking a significant step toward improving connectivity in the region. Located adjacent to the existing Thane Creek Bridge II (TCB-2), TCB-3 involves constructing two parallel three-lane bridges, each spanning approximately 1.8 kilometers across the Thane Creek. When combined with the existing six-lane TCB-2, this extension will result in a total of 12 lanes, significantly boosting traffic capacity and streamlining commutes between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Salient Features of TCB-3
- Engineered to last 100 years, TCB-3 is built to accommodate IRC load standards, supporting heavy vehicular traffic.
- TCB-3’s six new lanes aim to ease congestion along the creek, where bottlenecks currently slow down traffic.
- Designed with commercial traffic in mind, TCB-3 will facilitate smoother access for vehicles.
- The combined TCB system (TCB-1, TCB-2, and TCB-3) is expected to handle over 100,000 commuters daily.
Impact on Mumbai-Navi Mumbai Connectivity
Since 2010-2011, increased urbanization in Navi Mumbai has put immense pressure on existing infrastructure. By adding TCB-3, a substantial reduction in congestion for daily motorists and commercial vehicles is anticipated. Beyond easing commuter stress, the new bridge will help foster regional development, spur tourism, and enhance overall connectivity between two rapidly growing urban centers.
Inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Eknath Shinde, TCB-3 represents a significant milestone for Mumbai’s urban infrastructure, promising smoother, faster, and safer travel for the thousands who rely on these critical roadways every day.
Yogesh Waingankar, Head Structures said, “Assystem in India is proud to contribute to the development of the Thane Creek Bridge III (TCB-3), a transformative infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic on the Sion-Panvel Highway. Once completed, TCB-3 will add six lanes alongside the existing bridges, reducing congestion and supporting a smoother, faster commute between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.”
Assystem Supports the Construction of the New Pamban Bridge
The construction of the New Pamban Bridge, a monumental project aimed at enhancing connectivity and boosting economic growth, is now underway. Located parallel to the existing iconic Pamban Bridge, this new structure is designed to meet the growing demands of modern transportation and withstand extreme weather conditions. Expected to be completed by December 2021, the bridge will significantly enhance the region’s infrastructure while preserving the heritage of the original landmark.
Key to this project is the introduction of a 72-meter-long vertical lift span, which will allow ships to pass through the channel by raising the bridge 17 meters. This feature, along with 100 spans stretching across 2.078 kilometers, will make the bridge a unique piece of engineering. The entire structure will stand three meters higher than the original bridge, ensuring durability and safety for years to come.
More than just a bridge, this project will play a critical role in improving connectivity between mainland India and the historically significant Pamban Island, home to the revered Rameshwaram Temple and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to facilitate smoother train operations, bolster tourism, and contribute to the economic upliftment of the region.
Assystem is proud to contribute to the success of this project, which highlights both our engineering expertise and commitment to sustainable, impactful development. The New Pamban Bridge will not only serve as a vital transport link but also as a symbol of progress for the region.
