Context and challenges
Increasing urbanisation requires us to rethink today’s cities and the buildings that compose them. Moreover, with the advent of smart city thinking, buildings must be designed to fit into a larger and more coordinated vision in terms of energy consumption, workplace optimisation and security. The design and content of tomorrow’s buildings will be just as important as systems engineering and traditional building construction.
Adopting smarter working to reduce construction costs and improve the operating performance
The operation of buildings needs to be integrated and anticipated to ensure optimum performance is achieved. Developing digital tools to evaluate the impact on the operation phase is a major challenge. As 70% of the operating costs of a technical building are set in the conception choices defined during the design phase (regardless of the quality of operation), it is crucial to foster installations which are easy to manage with reliable control systems to serve the performance analysis of the building.
Adopting a cooperative approach for more effective and user-focused project management
The wide variety and highly technical nature of requirements for buildings and infrastructure projects, whether it be regulatory or functional, means that effective management is vital. This ensures that complex projects are focused on the user and the needs of the project owners. Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools for digital design and coordination, act as both a database and interface, making project management a cooperative process between teams working towards the goal of optimised construction and operational performance.
Ensure safety and security of buildings and their occupants through site protection solutions
In a climate of increasingly tightening regulatory constraints (personnel safety and environmental protection) as well as increasing exposure to physical threats, security has become a key issue in building design and construction. For sensitive sites such as defence, security or healthcare infrastructure, systems must be designed to incorporate adequate protection to safeguard human, building and product integrity, in the event of malicious attacks or extreme natural events.

Our expertise in Industrial and complex buildings
As an international engineering group, Assystem has decades of experience working in complex and industrial buildings. Assystem Stup is involved in various building projects: defence infrastructure, hospitals and healthcare sites, public buildings, convention and retail centres, sport infrastructure, universities, historical monuments and beyond.
Assystem Stup examines and integrates the specific features of each piece of infrastructure, using its multidisciplinary and multi-sector skills:
• A built-to-requirement design and construction phase
for buildings, in particular with utilities for the specific processes and interface of each infrastructure
• Operational requirements and the associated regulatory compliance considered, analysis of risks, containment, explosion, fire
• Highly specialised technical skills required in certain sectors, high-voltage electricity, HVAC and confinement, seismology and structures, lightning protection, safety notices
• Work projects completed at occupied and operational sites, in particular for heavy industries with high safety risks or establishments open to the public (service, rail transport)
• Environmental concerns for industrial and defence sites, in terms of safety, access and protection against malicious acts
• Digital services solutions deployed to meet the new needs of Operators of Vital Importance (OIV), in particular for hospital structures, by guaranteeing security for people, assets and information.
As an Owner Engineer, Assystem Stup takes charge of those large complex projects on their entire life cycle, using local resources (design experts, PM officers…).
