As part of the mission to alleviate traffic on the Sion-Panvel Highway, Assystem collaborated with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC) to undertake the development of Thane Creek Bridge III (TCB-3). This infrastructure expansion aims to support growing commuter demand between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, especially with the recent upgrade to a 10-lane Sion-Panvel Highway.
Project Overview
MSRDC engaged Assystem for this major bridge project marking a significant step toward improving connectivity in the region. Located adjacent to the existing Thane Creek Bridge II (TCB-2), TCB-3 involves constructing two parallel three-lane bridges, each spanning approximately 1.8 kilometers across the Thane Creek. When combined with the existing six-lane TCB-2, this extension will result in a total of 12 lanes, significantly boosting traffic capacity and streamlining commutes between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Salient Features of TCB-3
- Engineered to last 100 years, TCB-3 is built to accommodate IRC load standards, supporting heavy vehicular traffic.
- TCB-3’s six new lanes aim to ease congestion along the creek, where bottlenecks currently slow down traffic.
- Designed with commercial traffic in mind, TCB-3 will facilitate smoother access for vehicles.
- The combined TCB system (TCB-1, TCB-2, and TCB-3) is expected to handle over 100,000 commuters daily.
Impact on Mumbai-Navi Mumbai Connectivity
Since 2010-2011, increased urbanization in Navi Mumbai has put immense pressure on existing infrastructure. By adding TCB-3, a substantial reduction in congestion for daily motorists and commercial vehicles is anticipated. Beyond easing commuter stress, the new bridge will help foster regional development, spur tourism, and enhance overall connectivity between two rapidly growing urban centers.
Inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Eknath Shinde, TCB-3 represents a significant milestone for Mumbai’s urban infrastructure, promising smoother, faster, and safer travel for the thousands who rely on these critical roadways every day.
Yogesh Waingankar, Head Structures said, “Assystem in India is proud to contribute to the development of the Thane Creek Bridge III (TCB-3), a transformative infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic on the Sion-Panvel Highway. Once completed, TCB-3 will add six lanes alongside the existing bridges, reducing congestion and supporting a smoother, faster commute between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.”
